Comment... 
The referee's foul detection was generally good. He tried to let the game flow as much as possible but halted play when required. The referee was consistent with his awarding of free kicks and correctly dismissed a penalty appeal by England late in the first half. There were a few instances where players had a good case for a foul when the referee played on, but generally the referee's foul detection was good.


Positioning

The referee's positioning was average. He was often far too close too play, and on several occasions throughout the match this led to him obstructing players. In the 19th minute, the ball struck the referee as a consequence of his positioning, which could have resulted in a goal for England.


Man Management

The referee's man management was average. The referee sparsely spoke to players, especially when they perhaps needed a warning after committing a foul. There was one instance where the referee spoke to a Germany player after he felt he was fouled, but that was one of very few instances where the referee spoke to the players. Language may have been a barrier, but this could have been overcome by using gestures, which the referee didn't.

The referee wasn't required to act with his cards during the match. There were a few challenges that could have been interpreted differently by another referee and would have perhaps seen yellow, but at no point during the match was a booking absolutely necessary.


Fitness

Comment... 
The referee didn't have any difficulties keeping up with play.

The assistant referees had a few offside decisions to make, which all appeared to be correct. They were always up with play and helped the referee out when necessary.
