THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's foul detection was generally good. The majority of fouls were correctly identified, and on a few occassions the referee wasn't fooled by players going to ground too easily. The referee did miss a few fouls during the match, on one occassions penalising a Newcastle player for a shirt pull when the Manchester United player actually had hold of his shirt beforehand, but on the whole the referee's foul detection was of a good standard.

Positioning

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's positioning was generally excellent. At no point during the game was the referee in danger of obstructing players or the ball, yet he remained close to play and, as a result, was usually in the perfect position to correctly judge incidents. The referee's positioning at set pieces was also good.

Man Management

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's man management during the game was good. The referee spoke to players on several occasions regarding decision and fouls that had been committed, which helped with match control. The match wasn't overly physical but the referee did well to manage a few situations without brandishing cards.

Card Issuing

SATISFACTORY

Comment...
The referee showed 2 yellow cards during the course of the match. The first, shown to Newcastle United's #4, appeared to be justified at the time, though the referee failed to show a Manchester United player the same punishment for a similar foul. The referee also failed to caution Manchester United's #14 for simulation in the penalty area. Newcastle United's #2 threw out his leg but quickly withdrew it, yet the player went down in the hope of winning a penalty. The referee saw the incident clearly and should have shown a yellow card to the player.

Fitness

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's fitness was of a good standard.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1 - GOOD [8.4]
Assistant 2 - VERY GOOD [8.6]

Comment...
The assistant referee's had a few offsides decisions to make each, with seemingly no mis-judgements made by either. Assistant 2 had two tight offside decision to make, one of which resulted in a correctly disallowed goal. The other looked offside in real time, but the assistant didn't flag. Replay's showed it was infact an excellent decision as the attacking player was in line. Both assistant's were always up with play.

OVERALL

GOOD

SCORE

8.4/10
