THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee set out his threshold early in the game with a couple of early yellow cards. The players therefore knew what the threshold was right from the start. The referee remained consistent with his foul detection in terms of which he penalised and which he ignored. The referee was honest and fair to both teams, 50:50 decisions were evenly matched and no bias towards either team. Minor fouls were by and large ignored but more serious fouls dealt with correctly and efficiently.

Positioning

EXCELLENT

Comment...
Excellent positioning throughout the game not only whilst the ball was in play but also for set pieces. Positioned himself well where he could not only see play but also his Assistant Referees to ensure maximum viewability at set pieces for example. On one occasion a sliced ball saw the play change direction suddenly and caught him slightly too near play but he rectified it immediately with quick movement into a better position. Made good use of his diagonal and was able to deviate from it very comfortably when needed.

Man Management

EXCELLENT

Comment...
Spoke with players not just in a disciplinary situation but throughout the game. Was smiley and approachable when applicable. Gave clear instructions regarding where free kicks/throw in's were to be taken from. Built up a good rapport with the players who responded well to him as evidenced by the lack of dissent.

Card Issuing

EXCELLENT

Comment...
There were a total of 6 yellow cards and 1 red card. The first card was in the 5th min for a foul by Yeovil #15. It set the threshold for tackles for the remainder of the match. The second yellow was in the 16th min for a foul by Charlton #23 for a similar foul to the earlier one. 3 other yellow cards were for fouls 59th min Yeovil #5, 68th min Yeovil #2 and 70th min Charlton #18. The final booking was for Charlton #12 - it is unclear as to whether it was issued for dissent or delaying the restart of play following a penalty decision against Charlton. Either would have been justifiable and the card a correct decision. The red card was issued in the 77th min to Charlton #4 for a terrible late tackle.

All cards issued were correct and consistent. The referee was calm, isolating the player, issuing the caution, explaining his decision and then confirming the sanction with the 4O via headset.

Fitness

EXCELLENT

Comment...
Fully able to keep up with play and move himself into positions where he was able to maximise his viewability of the play.  Able to run backwards when necessary. No problems with the referees fitness.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1 - EXCELLENT  [9.0]
Assistant 2 VERY GOOD [8.8]

Comment...
AR1 was much busier than AR2, hence the higher mark. Both assistants kept up with play and got several offside decisions correct. Corners/goal kicks and throw in's all appeared correct with only 1 decision by AR1 challenged during the 90 mins. The ball hit a Yeovil player as it went out and the throw was correctly awarded to Charlton. The level of communication between the AR's and the referee was exceptional. AR1 was clearly heard saying offside over the headset when he flagged for an offside and a discussion regarding a foul was also clearly heard. Although content unheard it was clear there was constant and regular communication between the referee and both AR's as they were seen speaking into the headset. Excellent team work.

OVERALL
