THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's foul detection was generally good. Most free kick awards appeared to be accurate, though there were a few soft free kick awards throughout. The referee played some excellent advantages during the game, including one in the 6th minute of the first half which could have led to a goal to Tottenham after a foul by Manchester United's #3. The penalty award in the 56th minute was also correct.

Positioning

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's positioning was generally excellent. At no point during that match was the referee in danger of getting in the way of play. The referee was always up with play in an end-to-end match, and was virtually always in the perfect position to identify foul challenges and award the correct restart of play. The penalty decision in the 57th minute was made considerably easier for the referee due to his position on the field of play, resulting in a clear view of the incident.

Man Management

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's man management throughout the match was excellent. On numerous occasions, the referee spoke to players to explain decisions, as well as to warn players for offenses. This appeared to help the official's match control, with the warnings and explanations of the referee seemingly calming down players.

Card Issuing

GOOD

Comment...
All cautions handed out by the referee were justified, including the caution for Tottenham's #25 for the penalty award. There were a few fouls early on which, on another day or time during the match, could have resulted in a yellow card. There was one particular instance early on in the match, where the referee played an advantage following a cynical foul by Manchester United's #3, before speaking to the player once the ball had gone out of play. While this could be considered good man management, a yellow card would have probably been a more appropriate course of action for the player.

Fitness

EXCELLENT

Comment...
The referee's fitness was of an excellent standard.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1: GOOD
Assistant 2: GOOD

Comment...
The assistant referee's had a fairly straight forward match, with just a few offside decisions to call. However, assistant 2 appeared to be incorrect when advising the referee that a corner should be awarded in the 82nd minute, when the ball was seemingly already out of play before the defender made contact. Despite this, both assistants put in a solid performance - they were always up with play and assisted the referee when necessary.

OVERALL

VERY GOOD

SCORE

8.8/10
