THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

UNACCEPTABLE

Comment...
The referee's foul detection was generally poor. There was an evident lack of consistency in the referee's interpretation of fouls and, at times, free kick awards were random. The referee missed 2 clear penalties during the match, one for both teams. For the first, Manchester City's #6 tripped Barcelona's #10 within the penalty area, but the referee played on. The second was a tackle from behind on Manchester City's #10 just as he was preparing to shoot.

Positioning

SATISFACTORY

Comment...
The referee's position was generally satisfactory. On too many occassions, the referee found himself far too close to play and came very close to obstructing players and the ball. His positioning for the first penalty appeal was poor and didn't allow him to get a clear view of the incident which is perhaps why the penalty wasn't awarded.

Man Management

POOR

Comment...
The referee's man management was poor.

Card Issuing

POOR

Comment...
The referee's card issuing was poor. The referee's interpretation of what warranted a caution was erratic from the offset. An obvious yellow card for Manchester City's #6 wasn't shown early on, which, in contrast to some of the cautions that were shown, demonstrated inconsistency in the referee's display. The referee showed a red card to Manchester City's #5 which was, presumably, for dissent. The reaction to the sending off from Manchester City players appeared to be worse than the protests which resulted in the dismissal, yet no sanctions were issued.

Fitness

GOOD

Comment...
The referee's fitness was of a good standard. He was fully able to keep up with play throughout the 90 minutes.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1 - SATISFACTORY [8.2]
Assistant 2 - SATISFACTORY [8.2]

Comment...
The assistant referee's had a busy night in which several offside decisions had to be made. Their performance as a due was satisfactory, with some incorrect and correct decisions by both.
